Principal's Message
Dear Current and Prospective Holmes Families,
Welcome to Holmes Middle School and Humanities Magnet, a WASC accredited school, a California Distinguished School, a School to Watch, and an Excelling Magnet School! We are located within a quiet, beautiful residential Northridge neighborhood, only a few blocks from Cal State Northridge. Our exemplary Magnet and School for Advanced Studies (SAS) programs attract hundreds of families from all over the valley.
As our vision states: we are the school of choice for all students. We work together to nurture your child intellectually, physically, and emotionally.
At Holmes Middle School, our staff strives to deliver a rigorous and engaging instructional program that reflects our WASC student learning outcomes. Teachers in all content areas deliver instruction and assign work that will promote the development of 21st century skills. Students are expected to collaborate with others, communicate using various forms of media, and think critically throughout the curriculum. To increase student engagement during lessons, all of our academic classrooms are equipped with iPad/Chromebook carts and Promethean boards to provide our learners and teachers with the tools they need to be successful in this digital age. Our teachers continue to participate in professional development workshops to learn innovative resources and strategies to engage with our students. As we expect our students to learn, you can expect the Holmes staff to continue to learn and grow professionally so that your child can be successful.
The middle school years can be emotionally challenging for our students (and parents). Many changes occur at this time in their lives. As a middle school administrator with years of experience, I understand how difficult it is. For those reasons, I want you to know that we have resources to address them. We have various staff members available to assist you with your child’s academic and emotional needs. Our full-time support staff includes: three counselors, one school psychologist, one Dean of Students, a school nurse, a Magnet Coordinator, EL/Title I Coordinator, Intervention Support Coordinator, College and Career Coach, and two Assistant Principals. In addition, our Parent Resource Liaison serves as an additional support person for home and school communication, and she offers a variety of workshops and programs for parents to participate.
In addition to the wide range of support staff, we have systems in place to address the social emotional needs. Our staff receives trainings on addressing the social emotional needs of middle school students. Most recently, our teachers received trainings from the Quaglia Institute. They helped teachers to implement strategies that promote student voice and build positive rapport with students. Our support staff and administrators meet with groups of students from all grade levels on a monthly basis to discuss issues and topics that need attention and to provide them with opportunities to give input. Also, peer mediation provides students another avenue for them to receive assistance. Finally, our implementation of Gratitude Fridays help students to learn the importance of kindness and being grateful.
The numerous student clubs that we have on our campus is a testament to how our staff values the importance of connecting with students and having students feel a sense of belonging. Students may participate in the following clubs: National Junior Honor Society, Robotics, Odyssey of the Mind, Battle of the Books, Eco, Gardening, Photography, Harry Potter, Book, Drawing, Arts and Crafts, Bible, Gaming, Drama, Chess and Checkers and much more. If your child is an athlete or just likes to participate in sports, then he/she can participate in the intramural games and tournaments organized by our P.E. teacher during lunch time throughout the year.

En la Escuela Secundaria Holmes, nuestro personal se esfuerza por ofrecer un programa educativo riguroso y atractivo que refleje los resultados de aprendizaje de nuestros estudiantes de WASC. Los años de la escuela secundaria pueden ser emocionalmente desafiantes para nuestros estudiantes (y padres). Muchos cambios ocurren en este momento en sus vidas. Como administradora de una escuela secundaria con años de experiencia, entiendo lo difícil que es. Por esos motivos, quiero que sepa que tenemos recursos para abordarlos. Tenemos varios miembros del personal disponibles para ayudarlo con las necesidades académicas y emocionales de su hijo(a). Nuestro personal de apoyo a tiempo completo incluye: tres consejeros, un psicólogo escolar, un decano de estudiantes, una enfermera escolar, un coordinador Magnet, coordinador EL / Título I, coordinador de apoyo de intervención, entrenador universitario y profesional, y dos subdirectoras. Además, nuestro Enlace de Recursos para Padres sirve como una persona de apoyo adicional para la comunicación entre el hogar y la escuela, y ofrece una variedad de talleres y programas para que los padres participen.
Además de la amplia variedad del personal de apoyo, contamos con sistemas para abordar las necesidades sociales y emocionales. Nuestro personal recibe capacitación sobre cómo abordar las necesidades sociales y emocionales de los estudiantes de secundaria. Más recientemente, nuestros maestros recibieron capacitaciones del Instituto Quaglia. Nuestro personal de apoyo y administradores se reúnen mensualmente con grupos de estudiantes de todos los niveles de grado para discutir temas y temas que necesitan atención y brindarles oportunidades para dar su opinión. Además, la mediación entre pares proporciona a los estudiantes otra vía para que reciban asistencia. Finalmente, nuestra implementación de los viernes de gratitud ayuda a los estudiantes a aprender la importancia de la amabilidad y el agradecimiento.
